The page includes important definitions, key concepts, solved exercises, MCQs, short questions and long questions for board examination preparation.

Chapter Overview

Hydrocarbons are organic compounds made only of carbon and hydrogen. They are very important because they are used as fuels, raw materials for plastics and starting materials for many useful chemicals. Hydrocarbons are commonly obtained from petroleum, natural gas and coal.

This chapter mainly explains unsaturated hydrocarbons such as alkenes and alkynes. Alkenes contain at least one carbon-carbon double bond, while alkynes contain at least one carbon-carbon triple bond. Because of these multiple bonds, alkenes and alkynes are more reactive than alkanes.

Students also learn important reactions of alkenes, sources of organic compounds and refining of petroleum. Petroleum refining separates crude oil into useful fractions such as petroleum gas, petrol, kerosene, diesel and lubricating oil. These topics are important for Punjab Board exams because they connect organic chemistry with daily life and industry.
