Chapter Overview
Inheritance is the biological process through which characteristics are passed from parents to their offspring. It explains why children resemble their parents and how traits are transferred from one generation to the next. The study of inheritance is known as genetics.
Genes are the units of inheritance found on chromosomes inside the nucleus of cells. Chromosomes are made up of DNA, which carries genetic information. RNA also plays an important role in protein synthesis and gene expression. Together, DNA and RNA help control the structure and functions of living organisms.
This chapter also introduces the work of Gregor Mendel, known as the Father of Genetics. Mendel's experiments on pea plants led to the discovery of important laws of inheritance that explain how traits are inherited. Understanding these concepts helps students learn the basic principles of genetics and heredity.
