Chapter Overview

Coordination is the process by which different parts of the body work together in an organized manner. Living organisms continuously respond to internal and external stimuli, and coordination helps ensure appropriate responses. In humans, coordination is mainly controlled by the nervous system and endocrine system.

The nervous system consists of specialized cells called neurons that transmit nerve impulses throughout the body. The brain, spinal cord and nerves work together to receive information, process it and generate responses. This system allows rapid communication between different body parts.

The endocrine system controls body activities through chemical messengers known as hormones. Endocrine glands release hormones directly into the bloodstream, which regulate growth, metabolism, reproduction and many other functions. Together, the nervous and endocrine systems maintain coordination and balance within the body.
