Chapter Overview
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment. The core components of any homeostatic mechanism include receptors (sensors), a control center (integrator), and effectors. These components interact through feedback loops, primarily negative feedback, to regulate crucial physiological parameters such as body temperature, water content, and solute concentrations.
Thermoregulation is the regulation of body temperature within a tolerable range. Animals are classified based on their thermal biology into poikilotherms (ectotherms) and homeotherms (endotherms). In humans, thermoregulation is coordinated by the hypothalamus, which triggers physiological responses like sweating and vasodilation to combat heat, and shivering, vasoconstriction, and non-shivering thermogenesis to combat cold.
Osmoregulation involves regulating osmotic pressure and water-solute balance. Animals are grouped into osmoconformers (maintaining osmotic pressure equal to surroundings) and osmoregulators (actively regulating internal osmolarity). The chapter details adaptations in freshwater animals (excreting dilute urine), marine animals (excreting concentrated urine and actively secreting salts), and terrestrial animals (minimizing water loss through specialized skin and excretory systems).
