Sensory receptors and transducers convert external stimuli into electrical signals. These signals travel along pathways composed of sensory, associative, and motor neurons to reach effectors. Neurons are specialized for communication, with structural differences between myelinated and non-myelinated fibers determining the speed of transmission.
The nerve impulse is an electrochemical wave involving resting and active membrane potentials, propagated rapidly via saltatory conduction in myelinated fibers. Signal transmission between neurons occurs at synapses, where neurotransmitters cross the synaptic cleft to generate post-synaptic potentials. The central nervous system, consisting of the brain and spinal cord, processes this information, while the peripheral nervous system (cranial and spinal nerves) connects the CNS to the rest of the body.
